A Stitch that is changing the world.
"My customers are the fuel behind my needle and thread." - Bethany.
Since I can remember I grow and live around threads and fabrics. My grandmother had her own clothing stores and her sisters when they were young. My aunt has created a lot of things around this. I myself got the opportunity to start with this when I was 14 years old.
The fist time that I entered this world was with cross-stitching, one of my best friends decided to invite to her classes while we were of end of the year vacations and that changed my life. Now I create bags and pencils cases and a lot of sewing projects.
But every time that I talked about it, I always hear the words "that is a grandma hobbie" and that made very sad over the years. I didn´t share this passion to anybody. But now there is a whole new world with people that love what I love.
One day I was looking my Instagram for Inspiration or just for fun and I discovered this profile that showed a different way to use the threads and stitches.
I love the way that this looks so modern with a technique has been around for years and years. So I wanted to know more about it and I decided to send an inbox. And what I discovered worth everybody´s attention. Prepare to enjoy the lovely work and life path of Bethany.
This is an exclusive interview for Tres Chic Clau.
Can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
My name is Bethany, I live in a very small town in England among the sheep. I'm a redhead, my personality definitely reflects that... haha. I haven't been doing fibre art for that long at all. I actually got my first Embroidery Hoop for Christmas 2016, so I've been teaching myself Embroidery for around 2 months. I couldn't be more in love, I try so many crafts and find myself stumbling from one to the next, but I've fallen hard for Embroidery and can't seem to put my hoop down!
Why did you choose this type of craft? What it means to you?
I've tried many crafts, Embroidery is the only one that really sticks out to me. It's limitless, you can make a simple design or the most intricate art possible and it still has the same stunning unique effect. No matter what it is, it can be portrayed within a hoop, there's something so beautiful and timeless about Embroidery that keeps it so interesting.
What is your favorite about it?
My favorite thing about Embroidery is the textures. There are hundreds of different stitches you can play around with, materials and unlimited inspiration sources. Each piece will never be the same and all are unique. French Knot is my personal favorite stitch, I find it very difficult to stitch up a complete hoop and not include any Knots... I feel like
I'm going against my natural instincts haha.
In this your formal job or this is your hobby?
My 'formal job' is a full time carer for a family member. Which is what gave me the freedom to try new things in my new time. For now, Embroidery is a hobby. I do sell my work on Etsy but it no way near pays the bills! I hope one day I can do this for a living, what a dream that would be. A wise man once said - 'Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life'.
Which has been your favorite product to make?
My favourite product(s) to make are the KnotUp hoops. KnotUp is a collection that include hoops that are strictly made up of French Knots (my favourite). There is so many possibilities! Each of the pieces in that collection is such a pleasure to stitch.
Can you explain your costumers? What does it feel to have people buying your products?
My customers are the fuel behind my needle and thread. It's very difficult to put into words, but the feeling I get thinking that people dotted all around the world have hand picked out my art to have in their home... magical. It's truly humbles & flatters me everyday that I get to have my hard work up on walls around the world.
What is behind the words that you stitch? How do you choose them?
I like to be playful with the wording I use on my hoops. For now, the only hoops I have with writing are in my Taboo Collection. Which is exactly what it says on the tin! I know many artists choose to put inspirational quotes and meaningful riddles on their work, I decided to go different route. Straight to the point, a little shocking but will pull a smile.
What is your goal?
My Goal is to make this my job. I set many short term goals for myself, long term ones too. It's nice to look back on a bad day and see how much you've achieved and how far you've come. Doing Embroidery for a living is an absolute dream.
